Guidelines

Accept and Value Diversity- Each child brings his or her own specific skills and abilities to the classroom, and is unique and special in their own way. Some learn quickly, and some come to school with more developed skills. Either way, I believe each child comes into second grade just the way they are supposed to be. Please be careful NOT to make value judgements or label the abilities or skills of any child. Also, please do not compare your child's abilities to that of any other studentin the classroom- as they are all unique individuals.

Confidentiality- Please respect the confidential nature of the learning environment in our classroom. If any student shares any information with you that causes you concern for their safety or health, please tell myself or our principal. We will be sure to follow up on the information immediately. Please keep the content of the information you took confidential.

Appearence and Safe Verbal Communication- Please dress appropriately, remembering that you are an example to our students. Also, please let your conversation demonstrate respect for others and yourself. Avoid language that may be perceived as discrimatory, sexist or offensive.

If you are volunteering and there are several other parent volunteers in our classroom, please keep adult conversations to a minimum. This will assist students to stay focused on the class lesson or activity. Also, to aviod unnecessary classroom interuptions, if you carry a cell phone, please turn off the ring tone and hold all phone conversations outside of the classroom.

Tips For Working With Students

1. Be warm and friendly- learn the children's names and show interest in what they are doing and saying.

2. Encourage children to do their own thinking- give them time to provide an answer. Silence often means they are thinking and organizing what they want to say or write.

3. If you don't know the answer or are unsure of what to do, admit it to the student and work it out together. Feel free to ask the teacher for help if you need it.

4. Use positive comments and encourage the children. Look for something worthy of a compliment, especially when children are having difficulties.

5. Accept the child for who he or she is.

6. Respect a child's privacy- if a child reveals personal information, reguard it as a privacy.

7. Maintain a sense of humor.

8. Be consistent with the teacher's rules for classroom behavior, schedule, and learning atmosphere.

9. Wear comfortable clothes and don't be afraid to get down to the child's level.

10. Keep your commitment. The children will look forward to you coming. Keep all promises and make none that you cannot keep-Children never forget.
